Property television programmes are not

only popular with Chartered Surveyors!

We offer the services of Independent Surveyors and Structural Engineers who take great pride in our survey work and are very proud of the high standards we achieve in our building surveys. As well as Building Surveys, also known as Structural Surveys, if you want to know what the property is worth we can also offer Independent Valuations, Engineers Reports, Specific Defects Reports and Homebuyers Reports. If you need help and advice with regard to building surveys, structural surveys, structural reports, engineers reports, specific defects reports, dilapidations or any other property matters please free phone 0800 298 5424

As Independent Surveyors we note that there are many television programmes covering the property market aired on terrestrial and satellite television stations which we review in this section of our website. Our television review is our light hearted opinion of the television programme and gives a breakdown of the programmes content. In no way are we advertising the television programme or receiving remuneration for promoting it on our website we are simply giving general information.

Property Television Programmes

Since the days of the BBC home series Changing Rooms with Laurence Llewelyn Bowen, Linda Barker, Anna Ryder Richardson and presenter Carol Smillie which ran for eight years and fifteen series making the designers into household names programmes on property have become increasingly popular on our television screens. Changing Rooms had a dramatic affect on the British public as each week home owners would allow the team in to make dramatic changes to their homes on a shoestring budget. Presenter Handy Andy too became popular with DIY gripping the nation and spurring the viewing public on to make improvements in their homes.

Since the days of Changing Rooms television companies have developed many programme concepts and are continuing to do so. Perhaps in more austere times one focuses on one's home and how to improve it rather than to be able to move house so the DIY challenges various television makeover shows enlighten the viewers with the more viewers can focus on something positive rather than the doom and gloom of the national headlines.

Homes across Britain

As Independent Surveyors we carry out residential and commercial building surveys across the length and breadth of the country as do television programme makers covering eco renovations in Essex to a public house conversion in Buckinghamshire to converting an ex Post Office in Kyle of Lochalsh the list is endless of interesting properties. With the wealth of properties in a variety of styles, types and ages in Great Britain television programmes on homes and home improvements are endless.

Presenters of Property television programmes

From the early days of property programmes television companies have realised that a knowledgeable presenter gives the programme depth with presenters such as The Restoration Man's architect George Clarke, Country House Rescue's property developer Ruth Watson and Grand Design's designer Kevin McCloud all giving their expertise as each episode unfolds. A property television presenter with knowledge of the sector gives the viewer confidence that the home owners are being given good advice and understand the challenges ahead on projects undertaken.

Programme format

As with our work as Surveyors when we carry out a full structural survey of a property and present a report we have a formula whereby we give an outline of the property, highlight areas of concerns and then give further in depth details of any property issues property television programmes also follow a similar format.

At the beginning of most property television programmes the presenters job is to outline where in the country the property is located, the problems or issues or areas of concerns and the home owner's profile. In a property programme such as Location, Location, Location which has been on air for over a decade two scenarios are chosen for each episode where the viewer has an insight into two different types of property for house hunters with a variety of lifestyles.

Whereas a property television programme such as Country House Rescue concentrates on one property challenge whereby a large country house is in need of renovation with a family struggling to survive to keep the ancestral for future generations.

The reveal

In true before and after style each property television programme has a story to tell with the property problem, challenge or dilemma set out at the beginning of the show and at the end the result of a successful renovation, purchase or refurbishment.

In DIY SOS and Cowboy Builders some of Great Britain 's building work disasters are shown with the television programme highlighting bad workmanship and then at the close of the episode the happy home owners shown with their houses made back into homes once again.

When conducting Specific Defect Reports for our clients we come across many issues with buildings across the country in our work as Surveyors. Our Specific Defect Reports look at the property problems and help the owner with the challenge of addressing issues such as extensions that are not watertight and houses with structural movement for example.

Titles

Each property television programme has its own style and logo associated with the episodes and series whether it be as simple as Country House Rescue with its clean, simple font logo with flowing vegetation or The Restoration Man's cartoon superman character and historical scroll and an old style font they depict the flavour of the content of the television show.

The properties

Television property programmes have a wealth of properties to feature and property issues and with a nation who love DIY and building extensions the list of properties to feature is endless. When conducting full structural surveys as Surveyors we too are able to survey a huge variety of properties from old Tudor style timber framed cottages to Victorian town houses to modern office blocks the types and styles together with age of properties is vast. Great Britain has a vast array of property types and with the move to more thermally efficient homes in the future no doubt more eco friendly properties will be developed as the evolution of building and building techniques develops further.

Asking property experts' advice

During property television programmes experts are often called upon to give help and advice to home owners who are facing a variety of challenges and scenarios. Whether it is an estate agent who is asked for valuations in Location, Location, Location or Homes under the Hammer or a structural engineer giving building advice in Cowboy Builders or in Property Ladder Property Snakes and Ladders Sarah Beeny investigating similar local design issues experts are a feature of these programmes to add extra important advice and expertise.

As Surveyors we are always happy to help with property issues both large and small across the country and have a wealth of experience in property matters.

Property History

The history behind a property is fascinating and an area covered well by many property television programmes including The Restoration Man, Country House Rescue and Grand Designs. Buildings are a reflection of the time that they were built in and looking back to the buildings original history can be intriguing and also steer the home owner to making informed decisions as to any changes they may wish to carry out.

The future of property television programmes

From the early days of property television programmes such as Jeff Howell's Don't Blame the Builder to today's House of the Year, Homes under the Hammer, Help! My house is falling down, the list seems endless the topic is a must watch television gold. Whether you live in a small apartment or a large rambling country retreat a look into the homes of others is both fascinating and an insight into another lifestyle and can be both inspirational and thought provoking. As Surveyors we are asked to carry out full structural surveys on a huge variety of buildings and can help with identifying issues both large and small.
