Information on Abbots Langley

Situated close to where the M1 crosses with the M25 at junction 21/21a M1 and junction 6/6a M25 and bordered by the A41 and A405 is the large village of Abotts Langley in south west Hertfordshire where we often find ourselves commissioned to carry out structural surveys. The village is between Watford and Hemel Hempstead, and close to St Albans and with its good major road links a commuter village to not only the towns mentioned but London too with the Grand Union Canal running through it also.

Abbots Langley is an old settlement and is mentioned in the Domesday Book. The village name is recorded in 1045 in Saxon times as being called ‘Langelei', meaning a long meadow or long lea. The record exists because Ethelwine the Black and his wife Wynfelda gave the village to the monastery of St Albans . The Norman invasion of 1066 saw the land coming under the control of a Norman Abbot. The control of Abbots Langley under the Abbots continued up to the Tudor times.

The village has a delightful 12th century Parish Church of St Lawrence the Martyr with beautiful Norman arches at its north and south arcades.

Abbots Langley is renowned for being the birthplace of Nicholas Breakspear at Breakspear Farm near Bedmond, who is the only Englishman to ever be ordained was became Pope Adrian IV from 1154-1159; with several roads in the village being named after him and even a brewery!

In the 18th and 19th centuries many affluent people had fine houses and estates built in the area, as Abbots Langley was close to London and was a lovely area for a country retreat.

There are film studios to the south of the village on what was previously an airfield – Leavesden Film Studios, which in 2010 was purchased by Warner Bros and this has been the site where the Harry Potter series of films were made.

There are some larger detached properties in roads such as Blenheim Rd, Toms Lane and Abbots Rd in a variety of styles of construction.

Building Survey Abbots Langley

If you are planning to book a building survey on a property you are purchasing in Abbots Langley or the surrounding area then we would like to assure you that we always send a suitably qualified and experienced surveyor to carry out the job. This ensures that you get expert advice on any issues that we may find with the property we are surveying. All our surveyors are members of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors - RICS - and are Independent Building Surveyors. Being 'independent' means that they are working for you and you alone; they do not work for a mortgage company or an estate agents, so they have your best interests at heart.

All our survey contain lots of images, clearly showing any problems that we have identified at the property such as woodworm, rising damp or cracking to the walls. We also use sketches in our survey which are aimed at helping you to understand how certain areas are constructed or to help show more clearly a problem that we have identified. You will also find lots of definitions of any building terminology that we may use in our survey, as we firmly believe in 'Plain English' and really want you to fully understand what we are saying in the survey report.
