Berkhamsted Castle
Not much is left of Berkhamsted Castle which was once considered a very important castle as it is the place where William the Conqueror accepted the surrender of the Saxons following King Harold's defeat at Hastings . It was at this very castle that William was declared King of England. You can view the remains of this romantic Norman motte and bailey castle, with its unique double, inner and outer, moats. The castle is run by English Heritage and open all year round.
Chenies Manor House
Chenies Manor House was built circa 1460 by Sir John Cheyne and displays furniture from this period and tapestries. The house and beautiful gardens, which have a Physic garden and a sunken garden, are open to the public during the summer.
Old Gorhambury House, St Albans
Old Gorhambury House was built in 1563-1568 by Queen Elizabeth I's Lord Keeper, Sir Nicholas Bacon. Now all that is left is the remains of this once huge mansion. The extravagantly two storey porch has survived along with parts of the hall, clock tower and chapel.
The Natural History Museum , Tring
The Natural History Museum was the private collection of Lord Lionel Walter Rothschild the 2nd Baron Rothschild. The museum has over 4,000 species of animals on display from all over the world all within a unique Victorian setting with the fantastic high-ceilinged rooms and glass cases you can get up close to this amazing collection, which includes many rare and extinct species, including all sorts of mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, domestic dogs and even dressed fleas.
The Rothschild family gifted the entire Museum and its collections to the nation in 1937.
Ashridge Estate
Ashridge Estate is a large area of open countryside and mature woods set on the edge of the Chilterns Hills running across the borders of Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire. There are some lovely walks here and a much wildlife to see, for instance the fallow and muntjac deer. You may even spot a red kite!
There are fantastic views from the 108 feet tall Duke of Bridgewater Monument and Ivinghoe Beacon.
The Duke of Bridgewater Monument was erected in 1831 in memory of canal pioneer, 3 rd Duke of Bridgewater. You can climb the 172 steps to the top.
Gadebridge Park
Gadebridge Park runs from Hemel Hempstead Town Centre along the Gade Valley towards Piccotts End on either side of the Leighton Buzzard Road . There is a big children's playground with a paddling pool, crazy golf, croquet, giant chess and petanque.
Lowndes Park
Lowndes Park is situated in the centre of Chesham with a nice lake with geese and ducks.
Tring Park
Ting Park is the setting for Rothschild's mansion which was designed by Sir Christopher Wren. The parkland was bought by the council for the people of the town and is a great place for walks as there is around 300 acres to explore.
