We enjoy the beautiful town of Berkhamsted which is reasonably close to Hemel Hempstead and not far from the M25 and M1 motorways in west Hertfordshire on the edge of the delightful Chiltern Hills. The town is situated on the Grand Union Canal and the River Bulbourne running next to the canal. Some of Berkhamsted falls within a conservation area and in every direction it is surrounded by stunning fields and countryside.

Berkhamsted has a history going back beyond Saxon times and it was outside the Saxon fort that became Berkhamsted Castle that William the Conqueror accepted the English throne in 1066. This Norman castle was a favourite royal residence until the time of Queen Elizabeth I. Still remaining after a thousand years are the substantial earthworks on which Berkhamsted Castle was built. The castle is now in ruins and run by English Heritage.

Whilst this is a beautiful town it is worth making time to go for a walk in nearby Ashridge Forest , with its 5000 acres of woodland and there is a great cafe there as well near the Bridge Water Monument . Also the area is home to Ashridge Business School , a not for profit organisation, known for MBA's, MSC's and diplomas qualifications.

Alsford's Yard has a landmark of a unique Totem Pole, not something you would expect to find in a Hertfordshire town, but a gift from the Canadian wood yard as the area was once a prominent importer of wood from the west coast of Canada .

Since the Second World War Berkhamsted has grown and many of the original large houses which were set in substantial grounds have been demolished to make way for housing estates. However, Berkhamsted has managed to retain its charm. The town's High Street is long and almost straight and is part of the ancient Roman road - Akeman Street .
