Bishop's Stortford is a busy and ancient market town located in east Hertfordshire but on the border with Essex . The area around Bishop's Stortford includes beautiful countryside and pretty villages. During the Roman era Bishop's Stortford was a small settlement on the Roman road of Stane Street running from St Albans to Colchester , but the town was deserted when the empire collapsed. However, the Saxons settled on the site which they called Esterteferd, which eventually became Stortford. The ‘Bishop' part was tagged on in 1060 when William, Bishop of London, purchased the manor. Later the Normans constructed a wooden castle in the town and the mound still remains; the castle itself was in ruins by the Tudor era.

There are a number of good examples of 16 th and 17 th century buildings in the town along with a with fine 15 th century church. Due to the river and the roads the town gradually developed and the town became a market town by the beginning of the 19 th century and the town still holds two street markets a week on Saturdays and Thursdays. In 1842 the railroad had arrived and the town developed further.

Today Bishop's Stortford is considered to be a commuter town and the town centre has undergone many changes with a new town centre area and the building of new homes. More building is planned due to the close proximity of Stansted Airport .
