Burnham Thorpe is famous as the birth place of Lord Nelson born in 1758. The county of Norfolk is known as Nelson's County due to the fact he lived in many areas of Norfolk and was very proud of his home county. During his famous speech after the Battle of Copenhagen Nelson declared "I am a Norfolk man and I glory in being so." You can now see several ‘ Nelsons County ' road signs throughout the county erected to celebrate the 200 th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar.
Near the village green is The Lord Nelson public house, which was renamed in honour of the local hero in 1807, having previously been named The Plough. Nelson, who was then a young captain, gave a farewell dinner at the inn before leaving to take up command of the Agamemnon in February 1793; he apparently was a regular at the pub. The pub itself has changed very little over the years and still has no bar with beer being served from the tap room straight from the casks.
