Canvey Island is situated in the Thames Estuary just off the Essex South Coast . Although called an island it is accessed by road via two bridges. Tragedy struck the Island in 1953 when a tidal surge claimed the lives of 58 people. Since then the sea walls which stretch for about 14 miles have been heightened.
