Just north of East Midlands Airport not far from junction 24 on the M1 is the town Castle Donington with a mixture of architecture from contemporary shops next to Georgian and Regency buildings and some delightful 17 th century timber framed houses where we have frequently visited to survey buildings. There once stood a castle which when demolished had its stone used in Langley Priory, Donington Hall and some private dwellings. Donington Hall designed by Wilkins in Strawberry Hill Gothic style and has had many changes over the years including during the War being used for a depot for military vehicles and an area for storage and today is the head offices for British Midland Airways.

The famous Grand Prix race course is within Donington Park and started races back in 1931, closing for the War and then reopening in 1973 when Tom Wheatcroft, who died in 2009, took over and today has a full programme of events and a fascinating museum with the biggest collection of McLaren racing cars and driver's helmets in the world plus many other remarkable exhibits.
