Chadwell Heath sits across the Boroughs of Barking and Dagenham and also of Redbridge. The name ‘Chadwell' can be traced back to 1254, when it appeared in records as ‘Chaudewell'(literally ‘cold spring'). It first applied to a settlement on the Barking side of the ancient Barking Dagenham boundary. At one time it was also known as Chadwell Street (utilizing the old meaning of the word ‘street' to describe a hamlet. In the 1600's Blackheath Common in the parish of Dagenham changed its name to Chadwell Heath. It can in fact trace its development back to Roman times, when development began all along the edges of the London to Colchester road. Much of the area remained rural for many years.
In 1864 Chadwell Heath railway station was opened. Suburban growth really began at the start of the 20th century, and continued through the First World War, increasing further after that time. It was a terminus for both the London tram system and later the trolley bus service from Aldgate. These trolley buses turned around at Station Road and Wangye Road . Chadwell Heath suffered several bombings during the Second World War and traces of the heavy anti-aircraft battery located there still remain.
