Chatteris is mentioned in the Domesday Book as Cateriz and Cetriz.
Boudica was Queen of the Iceni people in Norfolk . She was outraged that the Romans had invaded Britain and in around AD60 she rose up and led a revolt against them. Boudica is reported to have sought refuge in Chatteris when fleeing from the Romans. She fought a strong battle, but was eventually defeated by Suetonius the Roman Governor and his troops.
During the reign of King Edgar, in around 1000 A.D., the town housed a Benedictine Nunnery and the Park Streets mark the boundary where it stood. Much of the old town was destroyed by a huge fire between 1306-1310 and in fact the fire destroyed the Nunnery.
To north of the town is the famous Forty Foot Drain (also known as Vermuyden's Drain), which is important to aid the drainage of the Fens .
The town has good transport links to London with a train station and good network of roads.
