Interesting Facts about Cheshunt

  • The Lord Protector of the Commonwealth, Richard Cromwell, died in Chshunt in 1712.
  • Sir Cliff Richard, famous singer, once lived in the Bury Green neighbourhood of Cheshunt.
  • Debenhams were founded in Cheshunt.
  • The headquarters of Tescos is located in Cheshunt.
  • Victoria Beckham used to live in the nearby village of Goffs Oak.
  • The River Lee Navigation runs through Cheshunt and was used for the transport of crops and flowers to the London markets for many years.
  • The sand and gravel extraction which took place in the in the late 1950s and early 1960s in Lee Valley Park formed the mature lakes which are now much enjoyed by visitors (see places of interest below).
  • The name Cheshunt comes from the Roman name for the area, Cestrehunt.
  • In 2003 televisions ‘Time Team' came to Cheshunt Park and unearthed the Roman road - Ermine Street . This road connected London to York.

 

Places of Interest in and around Cheshunt

Cheshunt Parish Church

The ancient parish church of Cheshunt , is dedicated to St Mary the Virgin. The ancient burial ground was used from earliest times up to the year 1855. Near the south wall of the churchyard, opposite the south door of the church, is a medieval stone coffin which was found in 1872 being used as a doorstep.

The church itself dates from the first half of the 15th century and was restored by the Victorians. It has a 75ft tower with eight bells, the earliest dating from 1636, although all were re-cast in 1911.

 

Cedars Park and Cheshunt Country Park

Cedars Park contains the remains of Theobalds Palace . It has ornamental gardens, woodland areas, a heritage trail, a pets' corner, landscaped water gardens, a rose walk and an arboretum. Conserts take place in the park on occasions.


Cheshunt Park is made up of beautiful countryside with nature conservation areas including fields, a lake and woodlands.

 

The Eleanor Cross, Waltham Cross

The Eleanor Cross at Waltham Cross, is one of three surviving crosses of the original twelve which were set up between the years 1291-5, on the order of Edward I, to mark the places at which his wife's body rested when it was brought from Nottingham to London in December 1290.

The Cross has been much restored in recent years with the statues being replaced with replica statues to preserve the original ones. The cross is considered to be one of the most important examples of English Gothic monumental sculpture in this country.

 

Lee Valley Park

Lee Valley Park runs for 26 miles from the East End of London to Ware in Hertfordshire. It includes the River Lee Country Park at Cheshunt where there are nature trails to follow and some of the pathways are for cyclists too. People can become involved in activities in different areas of this park, for example walking, fishing, birdwatching, cycling and swimming.  

Broxbourne Mill  

The Broxbourne Mill is mentioned in the Domesday Survey where it is described as being worth eight shillings at the time. The Mill was held by the Priory of the Knights of St John of Jerusalem, until their lands were confiscated by Henry VIII at the time of the Reformation. In 1949 the Mill was destroyed by fire but was restored in 1984.

Lowewood Museum , Hoddesdon

Lowewood Museum covers the local history of the area using exhibits which have been donated by members of the community such as photographs and displays of items showing what town life was like in the 1800s.

Paradise Wildlife Park , Broxbourne  

Paradise Wildlife Park is in nearby Broxbourne and is a great day out for the family. You can see all sorts of animals such as zebras, camels, tigers and lions along with monkeys and wolves. There are also adventure playgrounds and rides for children.

 

Goffs Sports Centre at Cheshunt

Goffs Sports Centre has an Astroturf pitch used for football, hockey and training. There is a multi-purpose sports hall which can be used for badminton, netball, aerobics, basketball and indoor cricket as well as martial arts. There are also tennis and netball courts with floodlights to aid playing later in the day. Lots to do here then!

Grundy Park Leisure Centre at Cheshunt

The Grudy Park Leisure Centre has a 25m swimming pool along with a learner pool too. There is a gym and also a sports hall and squash facilities and five-a-side football. There is also a creche here. Trampolining, table tennis, badminton, basketball, netball and martial arts are also carried out here.

Whithern Park at Cheshunt

This park is an ornamental park with walkways. There is a bowling green too.
