  • Fenny Stratford in Old English means ‘marshy ford on a Roman Road'.
  • Possibly the oldest gold coin found in Britain was found in Fenny Stratford. It is a gold stater from the mid-second century BCE.
  • In 1252 the town was recorded in manorial rolls as being spelt ‘Fenni Stratford'.
  • Fenny Stratford is an ancient Market Town.
  • In 1665 the bubonic plague meant that the main road was diverted away from the town and the market died off.
  • Fenny Stratford has a ceremonial tradition of firing six small cannons each year; these are called ‘the fenny poppers'. No records exists of when this tradition started but we know it pre-dates 1740.
  • Herbert Akroyd Stuart invented the world's first successful heavy oil engine in Fenny Stratford.
