Gillingham is surrounded by the towns of Brompton to the North, Grange to the East, Chatham to the South and Rochester to the West, is located near the M2 and just off the A2 and A289.
Gillingham Golf Club which built in 1919 has an 18 hole course and it is approximately 5473 yards in length. There is a clubhouse where you can hire out the function room for different events as well as the club having a full calendar of events throughout the year.
The town is well served when it comes to leisure activities such as the Medway Park leisure centre in Mill Road which has had government funding and is a fantastic facility with sports science and sports therapy courses and a wide range of activities from swimming to judo to dance to athletics. The Gillingham Ice Bowl is located in the Gillingham Business Park in Ambley Road and offers a variety of facilities from private lessons to parent and toddler sessions as well as being able to be hired out for parties and functions. The town has a football club who play at the Priestfield Stadium in Redfern Avenue nicknamed the Gills and the trampoline club called The Jumpers who are said to be the world's largest trampoline club located in a purpose built building the Rebound Centre in Mill Road .
Due to its position so close to Chatham dockyards Gillingham grew in size with many working in the docks until in 1984 when it no longer had its naval base the area went into decline. The Royal Engineers Barracks is now home to the Royal Engineers Museum in Prince Arthur Road which houses a vast collection of military history items from maps to photographs to an extensive art collection.
