Great Harwood is in the parish of Blackburn and only 5 miles away from the town of Blackburn. Today the town has a good selection of shops, cafes and pubs to enjoy after a day spent carrying out building surveys . It also has a Morrisons supermarket.

Historically there is evidence of Bronze Age activity which suggests that Great Harwood may have existed for many centuries. Around the time of The Norman Conquest of 1066 Great Harwood was mainly moor and marsh land with areas of cultivated land.

In the 19th century its main form of employment was weaving which was carried out as a cottage industry on hand looms at weaver's cottages. By the 1870s mass produced textile manufacture in larger surrounding towns saw the end of hand weaving and by the 20th century the craft had completely died out.
