Interesting Facts about Greenford
- The first recorded record of Greenford is when it is mentioned in a Saxon charter of 845AD; it was known then as Grenan Forda.
- Greenford is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 when the population contained 27 people and one Frenchman!
- Greenford is considered to be birthplace of the modern organic chemical industry when William Perkin founded a dye factory on land near to The Black Horse Pub in 1857. This produced a purple dye by artificial means, the first to do so. The site expanded as business boomed, but in 1872 there was an explosion and two men were killed. The works were finally sold and closed down in 1880.
- One well-known Rector was Edward Betham, who founded a school in Greenford in 1780, which still exists today. It was for the teaching of thirty poor boys and girls. Boys were taught the basics of Christianity, to read, write and to do sums, while girls learnt to knit and sew.
- The trotting track at Greenford was a pioneer speedway venue and open meetings were staged 1928 - 1930. The track would be called a long track now as it was of the order of half a mile/800 m per lap.

Gunnersbury Park Museum is a delightful Regency building which became the first country residence of the famous Rothschild banking family in 1835. Under their ownership, Gunnersbury Park hosted many grand social occasions.
It is now a museum, which collects and displays the history of the whole of Ealing borough (also Hounslow) in a range of temporary exhibitions. Here you will find local archaeological finds, domestic equipment and costumes, the last hansom cab that worked in Ealing, as well as the Rothschild coaches and original Victorian kitchens.
The grounds offer ornamental gardens including woods and lakes; sports facilities consist of nine-hole golf, tennis courts with football and cricket pitches.
London Transport Museum (Depot)
The Museum Depot is located in Acton. The depot holds the majority of the Museum's collections which are not on display in the main museum in Covent Garden.
The depot houses over 370,000 items of all types, including many original works of art used for the Museum's collections of posters , signs , models , photographs , engineering drawings and uniforms. The building has both road access and a rail connection to the London Underground network, which allows the storage and display of significant numbers of buses, trolleybuses, trams, and rail rolling stock plus more.
The depot is not regularly open to the public, but is fully equipped to receive visitors, with ticket office, shop and other visitor facilities. It opens to the public for special events, including themed open weekends.
Bitterns Field/Brentside Footpath/ Mayfield / Marnham Field / Greenford Island Area within Brent River Park managed for its wildlife interest. There are enjoyable footpaths across the meadows and beside the river, connecting Hanwell with Greenford. There is also a local walk around Marnham Field.

Part of Brent River Park this park is devoted to sport with football and cricket pitches, Perivale Park Athletics Track & Gym, Ealing and Southall Athletics Club and Perivale Golf Course. Costons Brook runs through the west side of the park skirting Perivale Meadows before joining the River Brent - walkers can enjoy the river by taking the Ruislip Road riverside walk.
