We carry out residential structural surveys and commercial surveys in Hertford. Hertford is an attractive county town with a rich heritage. Hertford is situated less than 20 miles north of central London . The town has managed to retain its identity as it is town centre is too small to support large stores and development has therefore been carried out in larger towns nearby. The town centre has lots of medieval streets with a number of fine old buildings, many of which are timber framed, with decorative plasterwork. Some of the most interesting of these old properties are in Salisbury and Parliament Squares. There is also the ‘Old Verger's House' which is timber-framed and dates from around 1450. (At 1st Associated we have a surveyor with particular interest in period properties and Listed Buildings. If you require a survey on a property like this then please call us for a quotation.)

The present castle in Hertford is actually a 15 th century gatehouse which was part of a demolished Norman castle. There is a very nice park in the town centre called Hartham Common.

The recorded history of Hertford can be traced back to the Saxon era when the River Lea had a crossing at Hertford around which the town grew. The River Lea formed the boundary between the Saxon Wessex on the south side and the Danelaw on the north.

After the Norman Conquest a castle, a priory and a new mill were built at Hertford. For the next three centuries the castle was a Royal home until it fell into disrepair all that can be seen today are the motte, gatehouse and flint walls.

In the late 1700s navigation of the River Lea was made possible and corn could be exported to London via the river. The growing town of Hertford could not be spread out further as the surrounding land was being farmed and this is when extra storeys were added to buildings to increase living space. It was in the late 1800s, when the railway was built that some of the surrounding agricultural land was used to build more homes.

More building took place during the Victorian times when the transport links were developed further and more industry came to the town.

1st Associated can tailor make our residential building surveys and our commercial building surveys in Hertford and the surrounding area to suit your individual needs. If there is a specific issue connected to the property that you are concerned about or want to know more about then we can give you more information in our survey report. For example if you want to know about the feasibility of having a roof conversion then we will specifically cover this in the survey we produce for you. As independent chartered surveyors we give you impartial advice. Do not expect an Estate Agent owned or recommended surveyor to give you impartial survey advice.
