Interesting Facts for High Wycombe

At the beginning and end of the mayor's serving year they are weighed in full view of the public to see whether or not they have put on weight at the taxpayers' expense. This is a traditional ceremony of the town that has been carried out since the medieval period. The same weighing device has been used since the 19 th century. The Town Crier shouts out ‘And no more!' if the Mayor has not put on weight and ‘And some more!' if they have gained weight.

Shopping  

The town centre consists of arcades and many brand name shops. There are two shopping centres: the Octagon centre and the Chilterns centre.

Theatre  

There is a large theatre in High Wycombe called the Wycombe Swan. Many acts and shows perform here before or after a West End run; it is considered to be one of the finest theatres outside London.

High Wycombe Museum  

High Wycombe Museum is housed in an historic 18th century building surrounded by peaceful gardens which include a Norman Castle mound. Inside, the displays explore the history of High Wycombe , but the main focus is the chair industry.

Hughenden Manor  

Hughenden Manor borders the northern urban fringe of High Wycombe . It is a Victorian Gothic house and was also home to Benjamin Disraeli for three decades in the mid-19th century. The three floor mansion is situated in its own extensive grounds with beautifully landscaped gardens which back into the attractive Chiltern countryside.

Church

Behind the Little Market House, the Parish Church was founded by the Normans and enlarged to almost its present day size in the 12th century. It is a very impressive building, the largest church in the county and contains many interesting monuments and memorials.
