However, when work was taking place to the floor of the church much older foundations were found to a basilican church from the 7 th century which is older that was previously thought.

The 1600s-1800s saw Hitchin being used as a staging post for travellers to and from London . Many of the inns and courtyards that were used in those years can still be seen in Hitchin today.

The mid 1800s saw the arrival of the railway and these new transport links opened up new opportunities for the town. A Corn Exchange was built (now a restaurant / bar) in the Market Place and Hitchin became a centre for trading grain.
