Hitchin is a very pretty market town in Hertfordshire with the town of Luton to the west and Stevenage to the east. Hitchin is a pretty lively town with lots going on; there are lots of pubs in the town and many very nice places to eat from restaurants to cafes.
The parish church of St Mary is a focal point at the centre of the town and one gets the feeling that the town plan has changed little over the centuries. There are lots of nice shops in the town and the town square is a cobble stone area. There are many buildings of historical interest in Hitchin which add to the charm of the town. Another attractive aspect of Hitchin is the River Hiz around which the town grew over a thousand years ago, which runs along near the church, making a very picturesque setting.
Hitchin can be traced back to the Hicce tribe who lived in the area in the 7 th century.
The town is mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086 as being a Royal Manor. By the medieval times Hitchin had become a prosperous place to live. The land around Hitchin was used for sheep farming on the hills and the flatter land was used for wheat, lavender and barley, making Hitchin a successful trading town. St Mary's church dates back to the 1200s and the money from trading of wool enabled the church to be built. However, when work was taking place to the floor of the church much older foundations were found to a basilican church from the 7 th century which is older that was previously thought.
The 1600s-1800s saw Hitchin being used as a staging post for travellers to and from London . Many of the inns and courtyards that were used in those years can still be seen in Hitchin today.
The mid 1800s saw the arrival of the railway and these new transport links opened up new opportunities for the town. A Corn Exchange was built (now a restaurant / bar) in the Market Place and Hitchin became a centre for trading grain.
