We carry out residential structural surveys and commercial surveys in Letchworth. Letchworth is a town located in Hertfordshire and is first mentioned in the Domesday Book when the land was bought by Quakers to farm. However, as the soil is very chalky in this area it was not so good for growing crops.

Letchworth became the world's first Garden City in 1903 after Ebenezer Howard's book ‘Tomorrow, A Peaceful Path to Real Reform' was published outlining his ideas for a new way of living. The book was republished later as ‘Garden Cities of Tomorrow'.

Letchworth Garden City encouraged more Garden City projects at Welwyn Garden City and worldwide at Canberra and Hellerau in Germany , Russia , Japan and other countries also adopted the idea. Howard's vision was to combine the advantages of cities and the countryside while eliminating their disadvantages. The idea being to keep industry separate from the residential areas and with trees and open spaces everywhere.

In the early days of the new town day trippers would come to look at the ‘social experiment' and the early settlers in the new town were often laughed at and mocked for their idealistic outlook on life.

Letchworth Garden City even had a ban on selling alcohole in public buildings; although one pub, the Skittles Inn opened in 1907 and was known as the ‘pub with no beer'. However, there were pubs that had been in operation before the formation of the Garden City and these continued to trade; the Three Horsehoes in Norton, the Fox and the Three Horsehoes in William and The George IV near Baldock which all still trade today. New drinking houses were opened on the borders of the town too. In 1958 the ban was lifted and other pubs have now opened, but not many for a town of this size.

Since the creation of Letchworth Garden City a number of new housing estates have been built and the town has expanded. Two Council estates were built: The Grange (built in 1947) and Jackmans estate (built in 1961) and then two private housing estates Lordship Farm and Manor Park were built in 1971. Like in other towns, in-fill housing has also taken place.

All our surveyors are properly equipped with the latest tools, for example, laser levels, electronic damp meters and digital cameras.
