Interesting Facts about Northolt
- After the Norman Conquest Northolt was given to Geoffrey de Mandeville, one of William's followers. There were fifteen hides of land, a priest, seventeen villagers, three cottagers and six slaves living here. There was pasture for cattle and wood for pigs.
- The most famous clergyman in Northolt was the Welsh poet, Owen Goronway, who was curate from 1755 to 1758.
- A famous feature of Northolt was racing. Pony racing began here in 1929. Sir William Bass and Viscount Lascelles were responsible for founding the one and a half mile race course. The track was extended in 1936. It was used as an army depot and as a prisoner of war camp during World War Two. After the war, it was demolished and a housing estate was built on its site between 1951-1955. In total, 3,423 council houses were built in Northolt. The Village Green remains, however, and reminds residents that Northolt was once a pretty village.
- The popular BBC comedy series 'My Hero' was set in Northolt.

Southall Railway Centre
Southall Railway Centre, London is the only railway heritage site and houses an interesting historical stock of steam and diesel locomotives, including the AEC Shunter the only one of its kind. There are many GWR and BR wagons and coaching stock, many restored to their original condition.
There is a display/museum area together with refreshment facilities. Workshops house some of our stock and railway artifacts.
Train rides are free, with a current entry ticket behind our steam locomotive ' Birkenhead ' in the GWR 'Toad' brakevan and on the Baguley Drewry Railcar. The Group Directors and membership welcome all age groups to come and see for themselves all that has been done to create a new Heritage site for everyone to enjoy and reflect in the age of steam.
PM Gallery & House
PM Gallery & House, is Ealing's flagship cultural venue and comprises of the Grade I listed Pitzhanger Manor-House, designed by the architect John Soane in 1800 and PM Gallery, West London 's premier professional contemporary arts venue.
Gunnersbury Park Museum
Gunnersbury Park Museum is a delightful Regency building which became the first country residence of the famous Rothschild banking family in 1835. Under their ownership, Gunnersbury Park hosted many grand social occasions.
It is now a museum, which collects and displays the history of the whole of Ealing borough (also Hounslow) in a range of temporary exhibitions. Here you will find local archaeological finds, domestic equipment and costumes, the last hansom cab that worked in Ealing, as well as the Rothschild coaches and original Victorian kitchens.
The grounds offer ornamental gardens including woods and lakes; sports facilities consist of nine-hole golf, tennis courts with football and cricket pitches.
London Motorcycle Museum
London Motorcycle Museum is located in nearby Greenford and was opened in May 1999, it is London 's only motorcycle museum. Housing over 60 exhibits it is funded entirely by donations, membership fees and voluntary labour. It is set in part of the old Ravenor Farm, next to Ravenor Park in Greenford. The museum offers free tea and coffee in their tearoom and advice on restoring motorcycles. Motorcycle souvenirs are available from the souvenir shop, which also displays some period merchandise.
London Transport Museum Depot
The London Transport Museum stores 370,000 items at 'The Depot' in Acton . The Depot's main objective is to operate as a working museum store. It is open to the public on selected dates during the year. The items on display range from old uniforms and posters to trains and buses. The Museum is a non-profit, independent Museum registered by the Museums and Galleries Commission. It is owned and operated by Transport for London.
Belvue/Northolt Manor
Northolt Manor is a Local Nature Reserve as it is the site of a 14th century moated manor. Belvue is a woodland and wide expanse of open space adjacent to St Mary's churchyard. Footpaths are provided for easy access to the most northern part of the Northolt Greenford Countryside Park.
Down Way
Small park area with a playground, five a side area and basketball area.
Fairview Playground
A recently developed junior playground area and youth football and basketball area. Also has picnic facilities.
Islip Manor Park
A remnant of the Islip Manor Estate and home to breeding birds, butterflies and mammals. There is a playcentre for pre-school children and a playground for older children to enjoy. There is also a small nature conservation area with a wildflower meadow. Northolt Bowls Club is based in the park and there is a cricket pitch available in the summer. Please contact pitch bookings.
Lime Tree Park
Re-landscaped in 2002 to include a pond planted with reeds, rushes and plants of local origin. The park is adjacent to the playcentre playground with an adventure area.
Medlar
Formal open space adjacent to Northolt golf club that provides a link between Rectory Fields and Northala. There will be site improvements in 2006 with the creation of a new watercourse, improvements to the entrance, and the creation of new paths, small mounds, and watercourse crossings. The re-development is part of the Northala Fields Development.
Northala Fields
This will be the main focal point of Northolt and Greenford Countryside Park once redevelopment of the site is complete. The new facilities at the Northala Fields development will include water features, picnic areas and play facilities for children.
Rectory Fields
Large playing fields with pavilion and extensive playgrounds for all ages. There is a small nature area with two ponds and a length of old hedgerow. A new 5-a-side sports facility with improved changing facilities is planned for the site.
Smiths Farm
The site is part of the Northolt and Greenford Countryside Park which is bordered by the canal in the east. The site supports a wide range of wildlife habitats including wetlands, grasslands and scrub and has a very good path network to enjoy walking around the site.
Yeading Brook Meadows
A Local Nature Reserve complementing the adjacent Yeading Brook Meadows in Hillingdon. The brook has a nice walk along the bank, there are ancient wildflower hay meadows and a small wood area. Great haven for wildlife with some uncommon plants!
