Interesting Facts about Potters Bar

  • The well known clarinettist Acker Bilk lives in two places, Potters Bar and also Somerset.
  • Tony Jacklin, Professional golfer and former winner of the US Open and the British Open, used to play golf at The Potters Bar Golf Club.
  • Potters Bar was the site of a rail crash in 2002 that killed seven people.
  • Potters Bar is twinned with Franconville, Val-d'Oise in France and also Viernheim in Germany.

Potters Bar Museum

The Potters Bar Museum covers the history of Potters Bar and the surrounding area and includes exhibits that have been excavated in the area which are of archaeological importance. The museum also covers the recent history of the area. There are displays of telephones over the years and also parts of the Zeppelin airship that crashed in the area in 1916.

The museum is located opposite Wyllyotts Manor, which is now a pub. Wyllyotts Manor is an old timber framed building some of which dates back to the 1300s.

Furzefield Centre, Potters Bar

The Furzefield Centre is a sports centre with lots of activities. There is a 33m swimming pool for all and there is a "Shokk" gym for the under 18s, a Health club with a fitness studio and a dance studio and health suite containing a whirlpool spa, sauna, steam room and treatment rooms.

An all weather floodlit pitch is also available for football and hockey etc.

Wyllyotts Centre

The Wyllyotts Centre has a 420 seat Auditorium, a cinema and theatre, along with conference facilities and an art gallery.

South Mimms

South Mimms is thought to be the most ancient part of this area and is mentioned in the1086 Domesday Survey as 'one berewick which is called Mimes'.

To the north west of Mimms Hall is a Norman motte and bailey castle thought to go back to the time of King Stephen once occupied a site north-west of Mimms Hall. It is believed that the castle was built in 1141 by Geoffrey de Mandeville, the writer and traveler. Excavations uncovered foundations of buildings including a timber keep or tower and lots of pottery has been found along with inscribed tiles and metalwork.

St Giles Church, South Mimms

St Giles Church at South Mimms was built around 1140 and was added to in around 1525 and then restored in 1876-77. The church has lots of good examples of monuments inside and the churchyard has mausoleum from 1907 in the Doric style.
