We carry out residential structural survey and commercial survey in Rickmansworth. Rickmansworth is a town which is situated in Hertfordshire.
Close to junction 18 of the M25 with the A404 bringing you into the town is the delightful south west Hertfordshire town of Rickmansworth in the Three Rivers (Rivers Colne, Chess and Gade) area where we often carry out structural building surveys.
The name 'Rickmansworth' dates back to the Saxon times and was named after the local magnate 'Ryckmer'; the 'worth' part was added to the name and means stockade or farm. In the Domesday book of 1086 the area was known as Prichemaresworde. The spelling of the name changed over the years and in 1382 it became Rickmansworth.
Rickmansworth has a charter dating back to 1542 but it wasn't until the 1790s when the Grand Junction Canal was built (now known as the Grand Union Canal ) that the area grew considerably. The canal enabled the coal to be delivered to industrial industries that sprang up in the town and also enabled the export of goods being produced.
The coming of the railway also attracted more people to work in the area and Rickmansworth was producing paper, beer, watercress and leather goods.
The growing of watercress was a big business in Rickmansworth and the surrounding areas as the plant grew well in the River Chess.
The town has many interesting buildings including in Church St Cinnamon Square, a bakery and coffee shop owned by the Barkers, which is set in a 16 th century building which is the surviving single bay of a previously larger three-bay hall house and is charming and a complete contrast to the coffee shop chains such as Cafe Nero and Starbucks etc. There are several public houses in the town and we particularly like the large black and white timber framed White Bear on the corner of Church St and Harefield Rd with seating at the back next to the river and a great place to stop at the end of a busy day conducting residential and commercial building surveys in the area. Another notable building is Basing House, built in 1740, which was home to William Penn who founded the state of Pennsylvania, USA, his home was on the site of Basing House with some of the timbers and doors used from the original Penn building present in the building which is now home to The Three Rivers Museum in the High Street.
There are several old Almhouses which were built for the poor in the town including Beresford Almshouses in Bury Lane and Fotherley Almhouses in the High Street which are charming old buildings which remind us of the thought for the less fortunate or less able set up often by Lords of the Manor in the past.
The town grew considerably in the years before World War II due to the London Underground Metropolitan Line running to Rickmansworth Station; this has made Rickmansworth a commuter town for people mainly commuting to and from London.
There are some stunning properties in and around Rickmansworth including large detached houses in Temple Gardens, Sandy Lodge Rd and Long Lane.
If you are planning to book a building survey on a property you are purchasing in Rickmansworth or the surrounding area then we would like to assure you that we always send a suitably qualified and experienced surveyor to carry out the job. This ensures that you get expert advice on any issues that we may find with the property we are surveying. All our surveyors are members of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors - RICS - and are Independent Building Surveyors. Being 'independent' means that they are working for you and you alone; they do not work for a mortgage company or an estate agents, so they have your best interests at heart.
All our survey contain lots of images, clearly showing any problems that we have identified at the property such as woodworm, rising damp or cracking to the walls. We also use sketches in our survey which are aimed at helping you to understand how certain areas are constructed or to help show more clearly a problem that we have identified. You will also find lots of definitions of any building terminology that we may use in our survey, as we firmly believe in 'Plain English' and really want you to fully understand what we are saying in the survey report.
