Interesting Facts About Romford and the Romford Area

Romford or Romfort as it was first recorded in 1177 means “the wide or spacious ford”. Located approximately 13 miles from Central London Romford is a large suburban town and is the administrative head quarters for the London Borough of Havering.

In 1247 Henry III granted Romford the privilege of holding a market in the high street every week. Over the years the market has expanded in size and stature and is still a focal point today, attracting many visitors.

An important factor in the development of the town was the arrival of the railway in 1839. This in turn saw a gradual change in the area from mainly farming to light industry and in more recent time's retail and commerce.

Up until 1993 The Star Brewery was one of the leading industries in the area providing employment for up to 5,000 people. After its closure the former site was re-developed into a magnificent shopping centre. Romford Brewery as it now called opened its doors in 2001 and offers the visitor a wide variety of shops and restaurants, with many major retailers taking up occupancy. It also houses a 16 screen cinema and a plethora of restaurants making it a good all round day out, offering something for everyone.

Romford's footballing claim to fame was in 1949 when it played in the first Amateur Cup final at Wembley. Unfortunately for Romford their opponents Bromley won the match 1-0.

Back in 1963 the legendary Beatles played live at the ABC Cinema in Romford and again later that year at the Odeon Cinema.

For something a little bit different why not pay a visit to Romford's renowned Greyhound Stadium with its lively atmosphere and good restaurants. It was the Winner of the British Greyhound Racing Boards ‘Racecourse of the Year' back in 1998 and 2003.

Romford offers the visitor a first class shopping experience at The Liberty. Situated in the town centre it houses over 100 shops and independent retailers.

The properties in Romford are always sought after due to their close location to central London. We have carried out surveys in this area and noted some superb properties in Heath Drive, Sycamore Grove and Castellan Avenue to name but three.

If you are therefore considering purchasing a property in or around Romford we would strongly urge you to have a building survey carried before proceeding with the purchase. Our surveys are extremely comprehensive. The Executive Summary at the beginning of the report gives an overview of the property highlighting specific issues with an Action Required and Anticipated Cost together with some good pictures both internally and externally. We then move on to the main body of the report in more detail. Our team of surveyors would be pleased to discuss your requirements and can be contacted on 0800 298 5424.
