Although Soho only covers one square mile it has something for everyone. Both locals and visitors alike flock to the area well known for its theatre shows, gay scene pubs, clubs bars and restaurants.
Developed as an urban area from the late 16th century the name Soho is thought to originate from a 17th century battle cry. During the 17th to early 20th century Soho was not regarded highly by the wealthy landed gentry in neighbouring boroughs and it quickly developed a reputation for cheap food, prostitution and shady dealings. Through the 20th century it became the centre of laid-back London with writers, artists and poets spending many hours in its pubs and restaurants. Today Soho is a multicultural area with narrow streets and home to industry, commerce, culture and entertainment as well as a residential area.
In 1854 the area was subjected to an outbreak of cholera. The cause of the outbreak, a public water pump was identified by Dr John Snow. His ground-breaking research proved that cholera was not air-borne as first thought but water contaminated by sewage. Soon after Snow had the pump handle removed to prevent the public from drinking from it. Many people still visit the pump which is now located on Broadwick Street with a plaque positioned on the original site just outside the John Snow Pub.
A popular area for visitors and office workers alike is Soho Square which dates back to 1681. It is a perfect way to escape the noise and bustle of Oxford Street and on a warm summers evening visitors can relax and enjoy the open-air concerts that are held there.
