We carry out residential structural surveys and commercial surveys in Stevenage. Stevenage is a Hertfordshire town situated between Welwyn Garden City and Letchworth Garden City. Stevenage has avenues of trees, parkland and lakes along with woodland and playing fields.
Stevenage is one of the new towns which were created after World War II following the New Towns Act of 1946. However, Stevenage has been around as a town for many years and is recorded in 1060 as being called Stithenaece and again in the Domesday Book of 1086 it is recorded as being called Stigenace.
Stevenage is situated close to a Roman road which travelled from Baldock to Verulamium (now St Albans) and there is evidence to suggest that some Romans settled here.
A Saxon camp has also been found in some woods and it is here that the first village was built later with a church and manor house.
In 1281 the town was given a Royal Charter allowing a yearly fair and two weekly markets. The annual fair is still held in the High Street to this day.
The population of Stevenage gradually increased over the years and due to the North Road this meant that in the 18 th and early 19 th century a number of stage coaches were travelling through Stevenage on a daily basis requiring the many inns to provide accommodation and a resting place for travellers and horses. This period of growth in the town slowed down after 1857 when the railways were built and there was no need for stage coaches to travel through the town.
After Word War II there was a need for new towns to be built around London and Stevenage was the first of the New Towns. Six neighbourhoods were to be built in the town and the first two ‘estates' were Stoney Hall and Monks Wood which were open for occupation in 1951. Bedwell followed in 1952, then Broadwater and Shephall in 1953 and in the 1960s Chells estate followed by Pins Green and Symonds Green.
Stevenage has a pedestrianised centre and it's claim to fame is that it was the first purposely built shopping area to be traffic free.
