Information on Stone

Situated around 7 miles north of Stafford , Stone is known for the Joules Brewery brewed originally by 12th century Augustinian monks at their priory. Each barrel was blessed by the monks and marked with a cross until Henry VIII ordered the Dissolution of the Monasteries. John Joules went on to use the red cross for their ales which became their trademark. The company was bought by Bass Charrington in the early 1970s and the brewery was demolished and for 36 years the Joules Brand was retired. However in July 2010 a new brewery was opened in Market Drayton and the Joules brand has re-emerged.

The first Stone Book Festival took place in September 2010. Celebrity guests at the 2011 Festival include former politician Roy Hattersley and Carol Ann Duffy who was Poet Laureate in 2009.
