Interesting Facts about Tring

  • Christopher Wren designed the Mansion in 1682 Colonel Guy.
  • Lawrence Washington , the great grandfather of George Washington the first President of America, lived in the Mansion.
  • In the late 19th century the estate became the home of the Rothschild family.
  • During Nathaniel Rothschild's lifetime, the Mansion and the Park were amended and altered greatly.
  • Guests at the Mansion have included The Prince of Wales and the young Winston Churchill.
  • In 1902 Lionel Walter Rothschild introduced the edible dormouse, the glis-glis, to Tring Park and they have now become established.
  • George Stephenson, famous engineer, created a complex system of ramps and pulleys to facilitate the digging of the Tring cutting.
  • The highest point in the county of Hertfordshire is a quarter of a mile from the village of Hastoe near to Tring at 803 feet above sea level.
  • Tring Farmers' market was the 29th Farmers Market to start in the UK and it was the first in Hertfordshire.

Tring Sports Centre in Mortimer Hill

The sports centre in Tring has a swimming pool, a large indoor multi-purpose sports hall and an outdoor all weather pitch.

The Natural History Museum, Tring

The Natural History Museum was the private collection of Lord Lionel Walter Rothschild the 2nd Baron Rothschild. The museum has over 4,000 species of animals on display from all over the world all within a unique Victorian setting with the fantastic high-ceilinged rooms and glass cases you can get up close to this amazing collection, which includes many rare and extinct species, including all sorts of mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, domestic dogs and even dressed fleas.

The Rothschild family gifted the entire Museum and its collections to the nation in 1937.

Tring Park

Ting Park is the setting for Rothschild's mansion which was designed by Sir Christopher Wren. The parkland was bought by the council for the people of the town and is a great place for walks as there is around 300 acres to explore.

Aldwick and Tiscott medieval earthworks that have been Deserted

Aldwick and Tiscott are medieval 14 th / 15 th century village earthworks at Long Marston which may have been deserted due to climate or disease. At the Aldwick site house platforms can be detected along with a sunken way and ponds and maybe a boundary ditch. Also there are signs in the fields of 'ridge and furrow' plough marks

The Tiscott earthworks site has house platforms along with a sunken way, and again ‘ridge and furrow' marks can be seen too.

College Lake Wildlife Centre, Tring

College Lake Wildlife Centre is a Nature Reserve set in 250 acres of land. There are woodlands to explore along with open grassland and lakes, woodland and grassland. Families can enjoy nature trails and walks and also observe nature from hides.

Grims Ditch at Hastoe

Grim's Ditch at Hastoe may well have originally been about three and a half metres wide and two metres deep it also had a wider bank about two metres tall, making the earthwork around thirteen metres. Much erosion has taken place to the bank and ditch but around one mile of it can be seen in different states of about a mile of it, in varying states of conservation.

Pitstone Hill and Aldbury Nowers

On the border of Hertfordshire with Buckinghamshire on the side of the Chiltern escarpment is Pitstone Hill. Pitstone Hill is a high quality chalk grassland near to Tring. The site is on the route of the Ridgeway and the Icknield Way .

Aldbury Nowers is adjacent to Pitstone Hill and is a wooded wildlife reserve.

From Pitstone hill there are wonderful views of the vale of Aylesbury and Tring. There are good walks here across the chalk grassland. There are lots of wild flowers to see along with archaeological features.

 

Puttenham medieval earthworks at Long Marston

Puttenham medieval village earthworks, is a shrunken site with a few buildings still visible. St Marys medieval parish church is on the site and the earthwork remains are behind the church. . The Domesday Book refers to the village as ‘Puteham'. You can make out two platforms of houses and ditches. You can also see remains of the medieval ‘open-field' system along with ‘ridge and furrow' plough markings.

Farmers Market at Tring

Tring's Farmers Market sells meats, fruit and vegetables, cakes, bread cheese, honey, plants preserves etc. It is not on every week so check dates.
