Interesting Facts about Uxbridge

  • The public house called ‘The Queens Head' has a sign depicting Henry VIII's wife Anne Boleyn. The pub used to be called ‘The Axe' and possibly dates from the 1540s. A tunnel connects the pub to the church.
  • During the reign of Elizabeth I a Catholic priest called Edmund Campion was trained in Douai in the Netherlands to give undercover help to Catholics. He travelled around England giving secret sermons and in 1580 arrived in Uxbridge for a few weeks. A year later he was captured and was hanged, drawn and quartered in London . Around 40 Catholics died during this period and they are called the ‘ Douai martyrs' which is also the name of the local Catholic secondary school, in nearby Ickenham.
  • Negotiations took place in Uxbridge in 1645 between Charles I and the Parliamentary side. These negotiations are remembered in the naming of the ‘Crown and Treaty' pub and restaurant.
  • In the early 19th century, Uxbridge had a poor reputation and the jurist William Arabin remarked of the local population that: "They will steal the very teeth out of your mouth as you walk through the streets. I know it from experience."!
  • Author George Orwell was a teacher at Frays College (now demolished). His book ‘ A Clergyman's Daughter' was based on his experiences there.
  • Most of London 's flour was produced in the Uxbridge area for about 200 years.
  • Dick Turpin the highwayman used to rob people in the Uxbridge area in the 1700s.
  • The Comedy 'Extras' writen by and starring R icky Gervais had many scenes for the show filmed around Uxbridge.
  • The film 'Genevieve' was filmed in and around Uxbridge and the surroujnding area.
  • The film A Clockwork Orange had some scenes shot at Brunel University .
  • Uxbridge has its own Royal Air Force station, known as RAF Uxbridge. This is well known for being the Headquarters of 11 Group (Fighter command) during the Battle of Britain.

 

Places of Interest in and around Uxbridge

RAF Uxbridge

RAF Uxbridge is best known as the headquarters of No. 11 Group RAF during the Battle of Britain. 11 Group was responsible for the defence of London and the South-East of England, and therefore was the main area of combat. The group headquarters were specifically at Hillingdon House within the base grounds. An underground operations room was built nearby to handle the control of the fighter squadrons.

It is also famous as being an RAF base where Lawrence of Arabia served.

The Chimes Shopping Centre

The Chimes is located in the heart of Uxbridge, providing around 80 retail shops. In addition to shopping there is a 9 screen Odeon cinema and 11 restaurants, cafes and bars.

Osterley Park

Osterley Park has a wonderful Tudor mansion which has been transfored into an elegant neo-classical house with wonderful robert Adam architecture and interior. There is also a landscape park and 18th-century groounds with flower displays and ornamental lakes. There is a farm shop on site selling home grown products and an art galleries which exhibits local artists' work.

Minet Country Park

A 90-acre park four miles from Heathrow Airport . Rich in wildlife, there are indoor nature-based activities as well as water features, pathways and a cycle track.

Harmondsworth Moor

The park has been created on 260 acres of reclaimed land near Heathrow Airport and contains meadows, rivers, lakes and ponds. It has 70, 000 newly planted trees and several miles of new paths and bridleways. There are also picnic and children's areas. Access to the community learning and parkland visitor centre can be booked by prior arrangement.

Stockley Country Park , Uxbridge

Located just 5 minutes from Heathrow Airport , Stockley Country Park and golf course offers some of the finest views in the area. The northern 274 acres of Stockley Park have been transformed into one of the largest man-made parklands in London . The parkland incorporates 11 lakes and nearly 200,000 trees and shrubs. A comprehensive footpath and bridlepath network is provided throughout the park, golf course and canal side. The clubhouse is open to the public including non-golfers and the balcony restaurant and bar offers a varied menu with views over the course.
