Interesting Facts About Walthamstow and the Walthamstow Area

Walthamstow was first recorded around 1074 as ‘The Place of Welcome' (or Wilcumestowe in the language of the time). The Domesday book records the location as Wilcumestou. Shern Hall received a royal visit from King John in 1213, and the building was still standing until 1896. Early on, Walthamstow was a collection of five small villages with the building of Vestry House as the first town hall. Towards the end of the 19 th century it had become the size of a small suburb. Until this time it was mainly rural. The railways and the fast development of the London suburbs during the late 1800's led to the population increasing rapidly, and by 1926 Walthamstow became a municipal borough in Essex. In 1965 the borough was abolished and, being combined with Chingford and Leyton, became the London Borough of Waltham Forest. Walthamstow is bordered to the north by Chingford, the south by Leyton, the east by Woodford/Epping and the west by Tottenham.

On June 13, 1909, the legendary aircraft the Avro 1, designed by Roe, flew for the first time from Walthamstow Marshes. It was the first all-British designed and built aircraft. Roe went on to found the Avro aircraft company, who developed the Lancaster which played such a large part in World War II.

Walthamstow market dates back to 1885, and is open between 08:00 and 17:00 Tuesday to Saturday. Notable as being the longest outdoor street market in Europe , the market runs for nearly a kilometer along Walthamstow High Street and sells a wide range of clothing, household goods and food. There is also a Farmers market on the High Street, nearby the Town square on Sundays.

Perhaps the most famous landmark in the town was Walthamstow Stadium, the home of greyhound racing. It Opened in 1933, but despite huge public protests closed down in 2008.

To the east of Walthamstow's commercial centre is Walthamstow Village a conservation area that is peaceful and attractive. We always enjoy visiting the small selection of specialist shops and eating places in between carrying out building surveys in the area. House prices here tend to command a premium in this area. It was voted best urban village in by ‘Time Out' magazine in 2004.

Famous people who were born in Walthamstow include actor Adam Woodyatt and presenter June Sarpong, whilst former Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli attended Higham Hall School, as did Florence Nightingale's father, William Shore. The Attorney General, Baroness Scotland, grew up in Walthamstow and both singer/songwriter Ian Dury and Sir George Edwards (Concord 's designer) have links with the area.

As surveyors we have carried out both residential and commercial surveys in Walthamstow and top of the list of desired locations is Oakhurst Gardens. If you are considering purchasing a property in the area we would advise you to have an independent survey carried out. If you are interested in architecture then look no further – Walthamstow EMD cinema a grade two listed building was opened in 1930 and depicts some fine Art Deco within its walls. In 2003 the building was purchased by a church with big plans to transform it into a church with conferencing facilities. However planning permission was refused so the future of a listed building is now uncertain and the building remains empty.
