Welwyn Garden City is another Garden City founded by Sir Ebenezer Howard where his vision was a blend of city life and nature hand in hand where apparently an apple tree was planted in every original house's garden. Its Howard Shopping Centre dominates the town today with leading high street stores and some smaller independents.

A notable building is Digswell House which is a grand Regency mansion which was used for many years as a conference centre with the famous people such as George Bernard Shaw, Lord Beaverbrook and Hugh Gaitskell amongst the many that have frequented the centre. In 1959 the building was transformed into an arts centre supporting artists at a low rent to work from the charming setting however this ceased in the early 1980s with the building being developed into a number of apartments.

There are a number of larger detached properties in Templewood, Lytton Gardens and Mendlesham in a variety of styles and methods of construction.
