West Ham is in the Borough of Newham. It borders the site of the new 2012 Olympic Park on its left and a mostly residential area on its right. The houses in this area range from Victorian terraces to higher-density social housing built after post-war both. The name of Ham (or Hamme as it was first recorded in 958) has been in existence for two millennia, since it started as a small Saxon settlement. The 12th century saw the use of the name West Ham for the first time – albeit as Westhamma. ‘ Hamm ', in the language of the time, meant ‘dry land between marshland and rivers', locating the settlement between three rivers – Lee, Thames and Roding.

A large parish within the Becontree hundred of Essex was divided into three wards – of which the village of West Ham corresponded to the ward of Church-street.

When the areas first railway station opened in 1839 at Stratford , the original settlement became less important, as most of the development started to take place in the New Town in that area.

By the mid 19th century the conurbation that London had become pretty much absorbed West Ham. The parish was incorporated as a municipal borough in 1886.

The Jubilee, Hammersmith & City and District Lines of the Underground serve West Ham station on Manor Road . National Rail also runs there, and from last year the Docklands Light Rail. Plaistow and Stratford stations are also easily accessed.

The wide range of transport options linking it to the City has made West Ham quite a sought after location in terms of housing.

Since 1904, West Ham United FC, currently in the English Premier League, has played in nearby Upton Park since 1904. Although football is probably the main sporting focus for the community, there are others that command interest.

Three rugby teams, the Kings Cross Steelers, East London RFC and Phantoms RFC all play nearby to West Ham station, on Holland Road . All three teams play in the Essex leagues.

West Ham is a highly populated area within the London Borough of Newham . Located within this suburban sprawl is Memorial Park. It was originally part of the estate owned by The Thames Iron Works who was a major employer in the area at that time. It was opened in 1897 to commemorate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. Football was always a regular past time at The Iron Works and they even had their own football team. Interestingly, in 1904 the team took on a new identity (the Hammers otherwise known as West Ham) and moved to a new home.
