Facts about Wolverton

  • Wolverton was the first railway town and was built specifically to support the railway works. Around 200 houses were built for the railway workers by 1844 including a church, schools and a market.
  • Wolverton has the oldest grandstand in the country.
  • Wolverton has one of the few remaining open air swimming pools in the country.
  • Wolverton once had a jaill in Church Street.

 

Places of interest in Wolverton

Shopping  

The Agora centre is an indoor shopping centre which has a variety of retail outlets. It also houses a small indoor market.

Buildings and the Museum  

It is worth visiting the town to see the buildings and structures built by the Railway Company. There is a museum in the town located in a Listed Victorian farmhouse.

The Lantern Festival  

The Wolverton Lantern Festival combines a street procession with people carrying homemade withy (willow) and tissue lanterns after which everyone gathers in the town square to sing carols accompanied by the Wolverton Town Band.

The Secret Garden  

There is a lovely green area between the avenue of horse chestnut trees along the canal and the back of the Electrolux building that the locals call the " Secret Garden ". If you want to seek this area out you can get to it from the Stratford Road and walking down the wooden steps or down the slope. The area was developed by the community and was donated by RailTrack to the community. It is well worth a visit if you are visiting Wolverton.

The Viaduct  

Take a walk around the local linear park and stop off to look at Stephenson's Viaduct, which is now a Grade II Listed building.  

This is a significant landmark in early railway history as it was one of Robert Stephenson's structures built for The London & Birmingham Railway Company.
