A: Admiralty Arch
Admiralty Arch is a Grade 1 listed building and a must see on your visit to St James's Park. The admiralty Arch is located at the North East End of the mall and separates St James's Park from Trafalgar Square. The arch which actually has three arches was built in 1912 as a memorial to Queen Victoria. The centre arch is today used only for state visits and Royal processions as an entrance to The Mall.

B: Birds in St James's Park
St James's Park is well known for its variety of birds and the robin, blue tit, great crested grebe, tawny owl, blackbird and woodpecker are just some of the birds you may see whilst visiting St James's Park.
C: Changing of the Guards
Why not take a walk over to Buckingham Palace which is adjacent to St James's Park to watch the changing of the guards which first started in 1837. This event takes place every day during spring and summer and on alternative days during autumn and winter and is where new guards dressed in red tunics and bearskins change duties with old guards. The whole event is amazing to watch.

The London Marathon is a 26 mile road race event around London each spring which is ran by approximately 30,000 people. The marathon starts at Greenwich Park and finishes at The Mall, St James's Park and makes for a fantastic day out for all. Everyone is welcome to cheer on the runners.

Q: Queen Mother Memorial
This bronze statue shows the Queen Mother at 51 years of age and is on the North side of The Mall. The memorial was unveiled in 2009 by HM The Queen and is a tribute to the Queen Mother who died aged 101 in 2002.

S: Squirrels in St James's Park
Whilst visiting St James's Park you will probably see the grey squirrels. Originally from North America these lovely little creatures are always very friendly and popular with visitors.
T: Trooping the Colour
Horse Guards Parade close to St James's Park is the setting for the annual Trooping the Colour. This is a military parade to celebrate the Queen's birthday. The flag is the ‘colour' that is ‘trooped' along the soldiers. This is a tradition that has been carried on from the soldiers that were in battle to make them aware of their battalion's flag and is a tradition which continues to this day.

The site for St James's Park was acquired by Henry VIII in 1532 and the Palace of St James's was built. Later on it was King Charles II who was well known for his love of the park who opened the park up to the public.
In the 1830's St James's Park was redesigned in a more romantic style by a man called John Nash.

St James's Park has a lovely children's playground to tire out the little ones and is also home to Inn the Park, a lovely café, restaurant which serves breakfast, mid-morning brunch, lunch and dinner. There is nothing like watching the wildlife of the park from the terrace whilst enjoying a bite to eat off of the restaurants great menu.
The bandstand in St James's Park is a great place to enjoy a free concert during the summer months and the park also has a deckchair service so you can really relax and enjoy the surroundings.

Monuments in St James's Park and the surrounding area
Captain Cook Statue
This bronze statue of the explorer Captain Cook is located next to Admiralty Arch and was designed by Sir Thomas Brock.
Duke of York Statue
The Duke of York statue is in memory of the Commander in Chief of the British Army, Frederick William who was also the son of King George lll. The bronze statue is on a 124ft column which it is said is this tall so as to stop Frederick William's creditors reaching him as he died with many debts. The statue is located on the north side of The Mall.
South African Royal Artillery Memorial
Located on the South side of The Mall this memorial was unveiled by the Duke of Connaught and is in memory of members of the Royal Artillery that were killed between 1899 and 1902 in South Africa in the Boer War. The memorial is of a winged figure of peace made of bronze restraining a horse representing war.
Boy Statue
The Boy Statue was designed by C H Mabey and was originally a drinking fountain. This statue can be found on Birdcage Walk.
Graspan Royal Marines Memorial
Designed by Adrian Jones in memory of the Royal Marines who died in China and South Africa this memorial of two bronze figures representing those that lost their lives can be found next to Admiralty Arch.
Royal Navy Division Memorial
In memory of those who died during World War I this stone obelisk and fountain memorial was unveiled by Winston Churchill in 1925 and is located on the north west corner of Horse Guards Parade.

The home of the British Monarchy Buckingham Palace is close to St James's Park. The Palace welcomes approximately 50,000 people each year as guests and the State Rooms at the palace are open yearly to visitors.
Clarence House
Built between 1825 and 1827 Clarence House close to St James's Park is today the official residence of The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall and Prince Harry. Westminster Abbey
Westminster Abbey has been the coronation church since 1066 and is a church steeped in history. The abbey was first used as a place of worship by monks around the middle of the tenth century and is today still a place of worship. Westminster Abbey is full of amazing art such as its stained glass and beautiful architecture. As well as being the final resting place for many significant people the abbey has also been the location for many royal weddings.

Houses of Parliament
The Houses of parliament also known as the Palace of Westminster is the central seat of government. It is made up of various buildings including the Clock Tower which is more commonly known as Big Ben, Victoria Tower which was built in 1860 and sits opposite Big Ben, the Commons Chambers and the Lords Chambers, Central Lobby and Westminster Hall which dates back to 1097.

Trafalgar Square
Home to Nelsons Column, Trafalgar Square is a major London landmark which is used for many activities, events and celebrations. At Christmas time Trafalgar Square is home to a huge Christmas trees which is given yearly as a gift from Norway.

Blewcoat School
Blewcoat School was founded in 1688 and provided education for the poor. The school which got its name from the colour of the tunics the pupils wore was acquired by The National Trust in 1954

St James's Park Station
St James's Park station and the office block above which was London's tallest office block in 1929 when it opened are Grade 1 listed with English Heritage.

The Guards Museum
The Guards Museum is an interesting place to visit and is within walking distance of St James's Park. The museum holds artefacts of Her Majesty's Foot Guards for the general public to see but is also used as an educational tool to help new Guardsmen to understand and learn about their regimental heritage.
Cabinet War Rooms
The Cabinet War Rooms on King Charles Street close to St James's Park are also worth a visit if you are in the St James's Park area. The cabinet war rooms (or underground bunkers) were used by the Prime Minister and his cabinet during World War II. The living accommodation for Winston Churchill and his family and staff can also be seen along with the ‘telephone scrambler system' concealed as a toilet from where Winston Churchill had many important conversations.
