Croydon History
It is rumoured that Croydon got its name from meaning a valley' in Saxon Terms. The other explanation is that it was also known as Chalk Hill, as it stands on the Northern Edge of the Chalk Hills called the North Downs (our Surveys show it is very a hilly area).
Famous people that were born, have lived, or are living in the Croydon Area
There are many famous residents and ex-residents of the Croydon area. We also heard a rumour that that many famous actors or comedians have been related to the area this is because of the many theatres and richness of arts and culture.
There is a good sense of humour in the Croydon area, which we have noted by speaking to people in the area; one of the most humorous was perhaps Ronnie Corbett, who had his heyday in the 1970's on the hilarious Two Ronnie's!
Famous buildings we have not surveyed!
There are many Heritage buildings and our Surveyors, although having been described similar to Spiderman on Surveys, have not been able to Survey these buildings!! There are many famous buildings such as Addington Palace , Croydon Airport Visitor Centre , Croyon Palace , Croydon Parish Church and Shirley Windmill .
Unfortunately we haven't been able to come up with any other really famous buildings in the Croydon Borough area, so anyone who knows any please phone or e-mail us, we are sure we can sort out some sort of prize.
We would add that as with many areas of London it has a mass of Victorian and Georgian houses, which may up the majority of the housing stock in the area, with some newer developments for the after war building took place, replacing bomb damaged houses and some housing with 1960 post-war built houses. We are more than happy to carry out building surveys, structural surveys, engineers reports on these properties to give you a clear idea of any problems that you may be buying when you buy your new house.
Things to do in Croydon Borough
The shopping centre is one of the best outside the West End with our surveyor that knows the area. Also, he advises that he is dragged on trips to art galleries, concert halls and theatres, all of which are relatively close, and of course the Clock Tower which includes one of the most modern libraries in the world, a cinema and three galleries.
There is also a Carnival Week in June every year.
We have heard that Croydon culturally caters for every taste, we don't know who started that rumour, but there is a lot to do!
