Essex has 14,222 entries in the List of Buildings of Special Architectural
Interest and 230 designated Conservation Areas within its area of influence.
This abundant heritage includes an extremely wide variety of settlement
types including hamlets, villages, market towns and larger, urban areas.

Both coastal and inland locations are represented and whilst the majority
are medieval in origin, there are also significant contributions from
later centuries. A number of areas of nineteenth century housing are included
within these conservation areas, whilst Colchester ' New Town' has been
given its own individual designation.
The twentieth century is represented by the former factory estates of
Silver End, and parts of Harlow New Town
