Hammersmith, a bit of funIf you can read these articles in the sprit they were written; that they were written for people that don't know the area. We would be more than happy to add any comments from comments from the Hammersmith area and any comments also from Hammersmith locals who feel that we've missed out any important facts, or indeed if any of the facts we have put down are not accurate.
Where in London is Hammersmith?Hammersmith is considered an inner suburb to the west, with links closely to Chelsea and Fulham, in fact it wall within the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham and is approximately five or six miles from the centre of London.
A bit further afieldHammersmith is bordered by Shepherds Bush, Willesden, Willesden Green, Cricklewood, Neasden to the north, West Kensington, Camden Town, Maida Vale, St John's Wood, Paddington, Marylebone (see our article on the Marylebone area) to the east, Fulham, Wandsworth, Wimbledon, Roehampton, Putney Heath, East Sheen, Mortlake, Barnes Common, Kew, Brentford, Gunnersbury, to the south and Chiswick to the west and has link via Hammersmith Bridge. It is also close to Ravenscourt, Battersea, Knightsbridge and Acton (please see our article on the Ealing area). We were also surprised how close Hammersmith is to the Thames and for those that don't know Hammersmith is on the north side of the Thames . We are having to carry out surveys, structural surveys and building surveys on all sorts of buildings all over London and we have carried out lots in Hammersmith and the Hammersmith area. Ways to travel in the Hammersmith areaHammersmith is linked to Central London via the Piccadilly Line and located close to Chiswick, Kensington and Fulham. The A4, known as the Great Western Road , the A406, known as Gunnersbury Avenue and Hangers Lane , the A3220, known as Holland Road , Warwick Road and West Cross Road , and the A205, Mortlake Road , are nearby, as is the A40, the West Way , with Marylebone Road coming into London and Western Avenue going out of London . Also nearby falls Shepherds Bush and not too far away are Kings Street and Brook Green, all of which offer good shopping, restaurants, as does Hammersmith Broadway. We also need to mention Hammersmith Bridge which links the north to the south of London and we must have a mention about the Hammersmith flyover, which is a classic traffic jam black spot. Interesting fact about Hammersmith area number oneHammersmith is known for its music and has venues that have been known by many different names over the years and are traditionally known as Hammersmith Apollo and the Shepherds Bush Empire, amongst others.

Hammersmith HistoryWe have been able to find very little on the history of the Hammersmith area, so anyone that can help us with this it would be greatly appreciated. Hammersmith was mentioned in the Domesday Book. More recently the London Borough of Fulham and Hammersmith was part of Middlesex before becoming part of the County of London from 1889 to 1965. There is a mixture of residential properties in the area; everything from Victorian and Edwardian to Georgian, with some Regency too. In older housing stock we tend to recommend a building survey is carried out, as there have been some horrendous alterations over the years. We once saw the most horrible rear extension, which managed to discharge all the rainwater from it into the rear ground floor bedroom.
Famous people that were born, have lived, or are living in HammersmithIt is rumoured, although we can't be certain, Sacha Baron Cohen, aka Ali G, comes from the area, as does Hugh Grant who was born in Hammersmith and went on to live in Chiswick. We have hunted and hunted round for famous people that lived in the Hammersmith area and they seem to be few and far between, so if you know of any more please contact us. Famous buildings we have not surveyed!
Whilst William Morris was born in Walthamstow he did found the Kelmscott Press at Hammersmith and we always like to mention William Morris, as he also founded the Society of Protection of Ancient Buildings, known as SPAB, to give advice to English Heritage, National Trust and the Government in general and our experts in older and Listed properties. Unfortunately we haven't been able to come up with any other really famous buildings in the Hammersmith area, so anyone who knows any please phone or e-mail us, we are sure we can sort out some sort of prize. We would add that as with many areas of London it has a mass of Victorian and Georgian houses, which may up the majority of the housing stock in the area, with some newer developments for the after war building took place, replacing bomb damaged houses and some housing with 1960 post-war built houses. We are more than happy to carry out building surveys, structural surveys, engineers reports on these properties to give you a clear idea of any problems that you may be buying when you buy your new house.
