We would be more than happy to add any comments from the Lambeth area and also comments from Lambeth locals who feel that we've missed out any important facts, or indeed if any of the facts we have put down are not accurate.

Where in London is Lambeth?

The Lambeth area is in London , or to be more accurate, the Central South part of London and is south of the River Thames. Lambeth is like many London inner suburbs, made up of many areas, or London villages for want of a better term.  These include Brixton, Battersea, Clapham North Lambeth, Norwood , Stockwell Camberwell (who it is rumoured have a College of Art !). 

We carry out surveys, structural surveys and building surveys on all sorts of buildings all over London and we have carried out lots in the Lambeth area.

A bit further afield

To the north of Lambeth is Waterloo and Southwark. North Lambeth in itself is another area. Across the water are Westminster , Mayfair and Belgravia . To the east of Lambeth are Elephant and Castle, Walworth, Newington , Bermondsey, South Bermondsey and Peckham and to the south are Stockwell, Camberwell, Brixton, Herne Hill, Dulwich, Streatham Hill, Clapham Common. To the west of Lambeth are Nine Elms, Battersea , Victoria , Chelsea, Pimlico, Parsons Green, Clapham and Knightsbridge.

Ways to travel in the Lambeth area

Ways to travel by road

The M25 isn't too far afield, and nor is the North Circular. The M4 makes its way towards Lambeth. The main roads into the area are A20 Sidcup Road, becoming the A2, also known as the Old Kent Road, the A23, known as Brixton Hill, the A24 and the A3, known as West Hill, the A203, Clapham Road, the A202 Peckham Road, the A3036, the Wandsworth Road, A3213, Belgravia Road, which is the other side of the Thames, as is the A3212, the Chelsea Embankment, all making their way towards Lambeth.

Major roads in the area, such as Kennington Lane, Kennington Park Road, Albert Embankment, Lambeth Road, Lambeth Palace Road, Blackfriars Road, The Cut, Union Street, Southwark Street, Borough High Street, Great Dover Street, Harper Road.

Ways to travel by tube

The tube stations in the Lambeth area include Waterloo , Vauxhall, Oval, Kennington, Elephant and Castle, Lambeth North, Southwark, Borough, London Bridge . Over the River Thames are Embankment, Westminster , St James and Pimlico.

Ways to travel by train

There are railway stations in the Lambeth area at Waterloo , Vauxhall, Elephant and Castle, London Bridge , over the River Thames is Charing Cross and not too far away is Queens Town Road , Battersea and Battersea Park .

This area is also covered by the excellent Google Street View, where you can literally walk along the road.

Interesting facts we know about the Lambeth area

Interesting fact about Lambeth number one

Lambeth originally belonged to the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Lambeth Palace was based opposite the Houses of Parliament linked by ferry (it is rumoured that our surveyors have cups of tea in the area and they know that the Thames is a good place to visit, particularly if you like the history of the rise of London and having a quick sail across the Thames on a historic tour that can be booked).

Interesting fact about Lambeth number two

Lambeth Bridge was built in 1750. Before that the area was marshland, which is hard to imagine. Lambeth and the Lambeth area became a good place for commerce and trade. Rows of older shops and terraced houses survive in Camberwell and Brixton on the high roads.

The Houses of Parliament and Big Ben, of course, are located in the area, as is London Bridge .

Lambeth History

It is said the area got its name from muddy port, again related to boats coming into the riverside!

Famous people that were born, have lived, or are living in Lambeth

There are many famous residents and ex-residents of the Lambeth and some related to opera and film making such as Sir Arthur Sullivan and Charlie Chaplin, both born in the 1800's.  We also heard a rumour that Charlie Chaplin used many local folk as inspirations for his film acting in the area (funny about the man who delivered breads and oats who he based his walk on) and that the Politicians often passed through it, no doubt on the way to London and even stayed in the area such as Brixton. 

Famous buildings we have not surveyed!

The Houses of Parliament, which is worth a visit you can see it on a tour of the riverside of the Thames.

The market places in Brixton, also known as the area where you get sold second hand goods and jewellery!

There is also the Carling Academy here, one of the best live venues in London .

Unfortunately we haven't been able to come up with any other really famous buildings in the Lambeth area, so anyone who knows any please phone or e-mail us, we are sure we can sort out some sort of prize.

We would add that as with many areas of London it has a mass of Victorian and Georgian houses, which may up the majority of the housing stock in the area, with some newer developments for the after war building took place, replacing bomb damaged houses and some housing with 1960 post-war built houses. We are more than happy to carry out building surveys, structural surveys, engineers reports on these properties to give you a clear idea of any problems that you may be buying when you buy your new house.

Things to do in Lambeth

The Oval Cricket Ground is popular with our Surveyors.  Also, one of our Surveyors advises that he recommends boat trips of the River Thames past the Houses of Parliament and attractions such as the London Eye, which he has been on before mastering heights! Harrods and Belgravia are relatively close and, of course, there are many tourists that come here for obvious reasons, making Lambeth very important as an area.
