Hampstead Heath stretches from Hampstead to Highgate with the south eastern side being Parliament Hill with its protected views over London .

Golders Hill Park : 210, 268 (stop on North End Road)

Heath Extension: H3 (stops on Wildwood Road and Hampstead Way)

Kenwood: 210, H3 (stop on Hampstead Lane)

Jack Straw's Castle/Vale of Health/Sandy Heath/West Heath: 210,268 (stop at Jack's Straw's Castle)

East Heath and the Hampstead Ponds: 24, 46,168 and C11 (stop at South End Green)

Parliament Hill, Highgate Ponds and Athletics Track: 214, C2, C11 (stop at Highgate Road)

Lido and Education Centre: C11 (stop at Gordon House Road)

By tube (all Northern Line)

Golders Green station (15 mins from Kings Cross) for Golders Hill Park and Heath Extension

Hampstead station (12 mins from Kings Cross) for Vale of Health, East Heath and Hampstead Ponds

The A – Z of Hampstead Heath

A: Art Fair

The Affordable Art Fair is a family event designed to allow individuals to purchase pieces of art which are not extremely expensive. It dedicates part of the Fair to Artists who are recent graduates so that they can show their work and people can purchase.

 

B: Bike riding

There are designated cycling paths which allow individuals to enjoy Hampstead Heath whilst riding their bikes. Whilst individuals are riding their bikes they can view many ponds and wildlife which can be seen over Hampstead Heath.

 

C: Conservation

There are approximately one hundred and eighty different types of birds to be seen in Hampstead Heath Park and in the winter months Redwings and Fieldfare can be viewed if you are lucky enough to see them. At night it is common to see bats that fly across Hampstead Heath as well as moles, hedgehogs and even foxes. There are conservation staff which help to maintain and sustain Hampstead Heath.

 

D: Diogenist Statue

The Diogenist Statue is located in the entrance of Golders Hill Park which is next to Hampstead Heath. The Diogenist statue was sculptured by Mark Batten and is made of stone.

E: Education

The Rookie Ranger Club is free to children from the ages of eight to twelve years old. The Club aims to educate the children about wildlife and outdoor skills in Hampstead Heath.

F: Festival

The Wellbeing Festival is designed to bring together communities to encourage health and wellbeing. Individuals could walk, bike ride, etc around Hampstead Heath or other local parks.

 

G: Generations Walk

The Generations Walk has raised tens of thousands of pounds and raises money and awareness for Breast Cancer. The Generations Walk takes part in Hampstead Heath and participants walk a total of five kilometres and at the end enjoy a picnic in the grounds of Hampstead Heath.

 

H: Heritage

There are nearly sixty historical features in Hampstead Heath such as the Grade II Listed Keepers Box and the Stone of Free Speech.

J: Jack Straw Castle

Jack Straw's Castle was a famous pub for people visiting Hampstead Heath where it was regularly visited by individuals who were part of the race course on Hampstead Heath. Jack Straw's Castle was damaged in the World War II and has since been turned into apartments.

 

K: Kenwood House

Kenwood House is an 18th century mansion and contains The Suffolk collection of paintings which are mostly portraits such as King Charles I and James II. Kenwood Gardens was designed by Humphry Repton who was an English Landscape Gardner.

L: Logs

The Logs is a Victorian mansion which is was built in approximately 1866 by Sir Thomas Maryon Wilson. The Logs used to be part of Hampstead Heath but is now located in Heath Road.

M: Many Bridges

The Viaduct Bridge was built around the 19th Century by Sir Thomas Maryon Wilson and is located near Heath House. The Viaduct Bridge can be seen from Hampstead Ponds and is a popular place to see a range of wildlife such as ducks.

 

N: North End Station

North End Station was built between Hampstead Heath and Golders Green and in 1903 tunnelling began. The North End Station never opened because of complaints from residents and it still remains today unopened.

 

O: One of a Few

There is a Victorian Penfold post box in the High Street in Hampstead which is a Grade II Listed Building. The Victorian Penfold post box is one of only a couple and is near Hampstead Heath.

 

P: Pergola and The Hill Gardens

The Pergola is a Georgian building made of red bricks and individuals will be able to see the amazing sights of Hampstead Heath as well as plants in the summer such as Jasmine and Lavender. The Hill Gardens have a fish pond which is a centrepiece and is a place where artists have been inspired as they can sit on the bench and see the whole view of Hampstead Heath.

Q: Quite a few appearances

Hampstead Heath has been used as a location for films and television programmes over the years. The film Scenes of a Sexual Nature was captured in Hampstead Heath and shows parts of Kenwood House. Additionally the film It in 2009 contains a writer who lives in Hampstead Heath. The TV programme Seven Natural Wonders featured Hampstead Heath and shows Parliament Hill.

 

R: Refreshments

In Hampstead Heath there are two cafes which are Parliament Hill Cafe and Golders Hill Park Cafe which are open at specific times throughout the year. The Kenwood Brew House Restaurant is near Kenwood House and offers a range of food.

At the end of a long day surveying stunning properties in the Hampstead area it is a must as an Independent Chartered Surveyor to have a break and take in the amazing London views on Hampstead Heath.

 

S: Swimming

Hampstead Heath is well known for its swimming facilities for men, women and children. The separate men's and women's ponds in Hampstead Heath are open each year to the public. In total there are four swimming facilities in Hampstead Heath, three are bathing ponds which are suitable for anyone older the eight years old and allow mixed swimming. Another swimming facility in Hampstead Heath is the outdoor Lido where individuals wishing to use this facility can buy season tickets.

 

T: Trails

There are many Trails in Hampstead Heath where one is about six miles long and the starting and finishing point is Parliament Hill Café. This trial allows individuals to see the Viaduct, Highgate Ponds and Kenwood House.

 

U: Unusual Secret Gardens

The Secret Gardens on Parliament Hill hold an event called the Spooky Secret Garden where families can dress up in fancy dress to take a tour of the Secret Gardens.

 

V: Volunteers

Hampstead Heath has an organisation of volunteers called Heath Hands which help to preserve Hampstead Heath. Volunteers work throughout the week and weekends and cover large areas across Hampstead Heath.

 

W: Wildflowers

The Wildflowers of the Heath Walk is where individuals can walk through Hampstead Heath guided by a member of the Hampstead Heath Team where they can search for some of the unique and interesting wildflowers.

 

X: Xmas Events MAS

In the winter there is an Ice Rink in Hampstead Heath where children and adults can ice skate whilst seeing the amazing landscape of Hampstead Heath.

 

Y: Yoga and Tai Chi

Individuals can take part in Yoga and Tai Chi which is located in the Sports Field which is just behind the Lido in Hampstead Heath. Yoga and Tai Chi is suitable for everyone and happens at particular days throughout the year.

 

Z: Zoo

Golders Hill Park Zoo is near to Hampstead Heath and is free to the public allowing you to view the growing exotic birds and many animals such as lemurs, alpaca etc. There is a café and for children and a play area which provides many activities to keep young ones busy such as tennis. The Butterfly House contains many exotic species of butterflies which is open for part of the year and a must to be seen whilst visiting Hampstead.
