Information on Isle of Wight and where to get a building survey

The Isle of Wight has a wealth of history from smugglers to kings and queens! In fact prior to that there is evidence that dinosaurs once lived on the island. There are many old pubs which smugglers of olde were said to frequent and some say still do!; such as the Buddle Inn and the Sun Inn at Hulverstone.

Osborne House in East Cowes, was built for Queen Victoria in the mid-1800's, originally as a holiday home, but latterly as her main residence. She died there in 1901. It is an English Heritage property and is well worth a visit. Carisbrooke Castle in the centre of the Island in the village of Carisbrooke, is famous for imprisoning King Charles I during the English Civil War. He was eventually taken from here to London where he was beheaded in 1649; again another English Heritage property well worth a visit, where you can still see donkeys on the wheel raising water from the water well.

The county town of the Isle of Wight is Newport, which has a wealth of shops, businesses as well as Parkhurst Prison! Cowes to the north of the island is famous for Cowes Week. Held in August every year this is a yachting festival that attracts people from all over the world, finished off with a huge fireworks display. Other towns and villages of note are Shanklin and Sandown with their beautiful sandy beaches and Sandown has a long pier, Ryde, Bembridge, which houses the island's lifeboat station, St Helens, Ventor, Bonchurch, Blackgang, which has one of the oldest children's adventure parks in the UK, Freshwater, Totland, Yarmouth, St Lawrence, Alum Bay, where you can take a trip down a chairlift onto the beach below famed for its different coloured sands and here you will find the Needles; a line of much photographed chalky stacks with a light house at the end, Godshill; famed for its thatched properties.

The Isle of Wight has one of the few remaining populations of red squirrels in the UK.
